After six years, how should I greet this woman?
I say, “Hello.”
“I’m proud of you, Son,” my mother says. Her voice is low and sultry, and the first words out of her mouth send a shiver down my back. “You remembered your place in the world, and you came alone. Alice is grateful for that.”
I close my eyes and swallow the wolf. “Is she with you?”
“She is. Shall I make her speak for you?”
I’m not falling for that. “You don’t need to. I believe you. That’s why I came alone.”______________________________
Early this summer while engrossed in Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's
Beautiful Darkness, I shut the book and shot up out of my reading chair. I had a sudden urge to paint - the urge to paint something, anything, with those characters I have been growing with since last year. Since then I haven't stopped painting these scenes and settings from books I love.
Now I want to take this idea one step further. Starting this month, I'm launching an Indie Book Club here on deviantART - only instead of reading and discussing from contemporary literature or the classics, we'll be spotlighting novels written by today's independent authors. The best part? I'll also be hosting an art contest for each novel as we finish up the reading.
We'll be starting off the club with
Peter the Wolf, by Zoe E. Whitten. Book 1 in its series,
Peter is a dark fantasy not without a touch of humor and an age-defying love story.
Want to get in on the fun? Here are the specifics:
What: Indie Book Club
When: Monday, September 12 - Friday, October 14
Where: Here on deviantART!
Not up for the art contest portion? No problem. You're still more than welcome to join us for any book club reading. The more the merrier! Just be sure you swing by the
Amazon Kindle Store or
Smashwords and grab your very own e-book copy of
Peter the Wolf before we start. (Of course if you would love a print copy, those are also available at
Lulu.) By the way, you can learn more about Peter and his story over
here at the Peter Portal. Interested in participating? Send
TanyaMarcy (Tanya) a note with the subject, "INDIE BOOK CLUB". I'll add you to the list and note you the details.
Looking forward to reading with you!

NOTE: Peter the Wolf has some dark themes and elements of horror that, while amazingly powerful and necessary to the story, may not be for everyone. Those under 18 are strongly cautioned.
